Tiong Bahru – The Past

Way before the annoucement of the release of the GLS site (current site of Highline Residences), Keppel Land had already done much research into the charming area of Tiong Bahru. The area is a place rich in heritage and old-world charm; it being built in the 1930s and is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore undertaken by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) to provide mass public housing. Through gentrification, Tiong Bahru has seen a huge movement of expatriates into this area over the last 10 years. Highline Residences – Similarity to world-famous High Line Park, NYC

Highline Residences is modelled closely after the High Line Park in New York City which used to be a disused elevated railway track for transporting meat and dairy produce to the docks. April 10, 2006 marked the start of the park’s construction which would replace the disused rail line. The 3rd and final phase will open in Fall 2014. This 3rd phase consists of 2 parts. The 1st part will complete in Fall 2014 and the 2nd part, the spur, will only be completed way after the High Line is open. The repurpose of the old rail line into an urban green park has rejuvenated and energised Chelsea. This revitalisation has led to real estate boom in Chelsea as well. Now, the High Line Park in NYC is world-famous and are littered with upmarket coffee joints, al fresco cafes and fashion boutiques. This gentrification brings with it something new but has historical remnants of the city which cannot be reproduced elsewhere. Art Moderne MontageThe 1930s pre-war buildings built by SIT adopted the art moderne form where architectural designs emphasize on curve forms and long horizontal lines. Designs of the then buildings seemed like a natural gravitation toward this art form as it was happening at a time when the world was industrialising. Hence, one can witness the designs of the windows and buildings in Tiong Bahru take after the form of aircrafts and ships.

Highline Residences SIT FlatsIn 2003, twenty blocks of 1920s pre-war Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) flats were placed under conservation status by the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority). The Tiong Bahru SIT flats took after a mixture of imported and local designs popular in Europe. These designs were inspired by the public houses in British New Towns which preferred the art moderne form that came with clean, simple lines and curves.

The Highline Residences was planned and conceptualised from an early stage to be an iconic building in Tiong Bahru. It will follow the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) range of perimeters; one of which requires it to house no more than 500 units. The development will stand tall with 2 of its tower blocks facing the east representing the ‘Gateway to Tiong Bahru’, warmly welcoming visitors from near and far. At the same time, a row of low-rise Dual Key apartment units will face Kim Tian Road.
